Diabetic Macular Edema (DME) is a condition that affects the eyes of individuals with diabetes. It occurs when fluid accumulates in the macula, a part of the retina, causing swelling and blurry vision. The macula is responsible for sharp, straight-ahead vision, which is essential for tasks like reading and driving.
Many different conditions can cause macular edema, with the most common being diabetic retinopathy, an eye condition that causes vision loss in people with diabetes. When diabetic retinopathy causes macular edema, it’s called DME.
Without timely treatment, DME can lead to severe vision impairment or even blindness. Comprehensive eye exams and early intervention are essential in managing this condition effectively.
