Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatohepatitis

OverviewOverview

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) is a liver condition characterized by inflammation and fat accumulation in the liver not caused by alcohol consumption. This condition is a more severe form of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), formerly known as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Over time, MASH can lead to scarring of the liver (fibrosis), cirrhosis, and even liver cancer.

MASH is a significant public health concern as it is closely associated with metabolic syndrome, which includes conditions like obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. This condition is becoming increasingly common, parallel to the global rise in obesity and type 2 diabetes.
