Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease

OverviewOverview

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a chronic digestive disorder where stomach acid or bile irritates the food pipe lining. It occurs when the lower esophageal sphincter weakens or relaxes inappropriately, allowing the stomach contents to flow back into the esophagus. This backwash (acid reflux) can irritate the lining of your esophagus and cause significant discomfort.

GERD is different from occasional acid reflux, which many people experience. It is diagnosed when acid reflux occurs more than twice a week or causes inflammation in the esophagus.
