Atopic dermatitis, commonly known as eczema, is a chronic skin condition characterized by itchy, inflamed skin. It often appears during infancy or early childhood but can persist into adulthood. The condition tends to wax and wane, meaning it presents periods of exacerbation followed by periods of relative calm.
This disorder can affect any part of the body but is commonly found on the face, neck, inside of the elbows, behind the knees, and on the hands and feet. Although it is not contagious, atopic dermatitis can cause significant discomfort and can affect an individual's quality of life.
