Osteoporosis is a medical condition characterized by the weakening of bones, making them fragile and prone to fractures. This disease often progresses silently and is typically not diagnosed until a bone fracture occurs. Osteoporosis primarily affects older adults, but it can affect individuals of any age.
Bones affected by osteoporosis lose density and mass. The disease often results from an imbalance between new bone formation and old bone resorption, leading to a net loss of bone. Due to this diminished bone density, even minor stresses or falls can result in serious fractures.
